ielts1.jpgMany EFL teachers have prepared students to take the Cambrige or other exams, like the IELTS or TOEFL…but have you considered becoming an examiner? Portions of these exams - generally the writing and speaking parts - need real live humans to assess them according to standard criteria. Becoming an examiner represents one route up the TEFL career ladder.

Taking the position of IELTS examiner as an example, a successful applicant will have three years or more of relevant teaching experience, will hold a CELTA, DELTA, or other similar teaching qualification, and will be either a native English speaker or “of an overall IELTS Band 9″ if a non-native speaker of English. Examiners are required to undergo re-certification every two years and are regularly monitored to ensure that global standards are maintained. Individual testing centers recruit examiners, and successful applicants receive face-to-face training.
